Chinese ink and watercolor on paper attributed to Liu Jiyou. Measure 30″ x 19″ Combined. Liu Jiyou was a Chinese painter who combined the elegant calligraphic style of Eastern art with elements of Westernpainting. His work is characterized by the dynamism and energy with which he depicted animals, particularly tigers. Bornin 1918 in Tianjin, China, Liu studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tianjin, where he learned traditional Chinesepainting and Western techniques. Between the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 until the end ofthe Cultural Revolution in 1976, Liu, like many other artists, worked for a state-controlled publishing house, where heproduced comics that served as propaganda for Mao Zedong’s regime. Liu’s success led to his appointment as thedirector of the Federation of Chinese Artists. The artist died in 1983 in Tianjin, China.
