Historical 1793 Land Indenture for Liberty Bell Property. Indenture is a transfer of a life lease for a piece of the property where the Liberty Bell now sits. "…a certain piece of ground situated lying and being on the South side of High street between the 5th and 6th Street from Delaware in the said city of Philadelphia containing in Breadth on High Street aforesaid 24′ and in length of depth 120′ bounded on the East by other ground". Document is dated August 24, 1793. Transfer is between William Gray (Brewer), wife of Mary Gray, and brother Joseph Gray (Brewer) to their half brother Robert Erwin Jones (Merchant) after the death of their mother Elizabeth Gray Jones, her dying wish that her older sons deed everything over to their younger brother. Witness of the document Francis Johnston and Peter Baynton, recorded by Isaac Howell. Owner of the property is John Potts & wife Mary Potts. John Potts was the founder of Pottstown, Penn. He and his father owned one of the largest iron foundries in the colonies and not only helped Benjamin Franklin create the Franklin stove but also in the political arena. William Gray and Joseph Gray owned Grays Brewery, one of the oldest breweries in Penn. on modern-day Market Street. Indenture is housed in museum quality matt and glass on both sides.
