Blue Springs: Infrared Photograph. Framed and matted 20”x16”. Image 14”x11”. Signed on verso by the artist, David Sponseller. Image is of Blue Springs in Orange City, Florida near Deland, home to Stetson University. Blue Springs is a well known for manatees. During the winter months when the temperature drops, the springs remains a comfortable 72 degree fahrenheit, perfectly suited to their preference. Infrared photographs are different than normal black and white. It takes a special film, or digital camera that has been specifically altered to only capture infrared light waves beyond human perception capabilities. Infrared photography captures the heat that emanates from the subject matter. This will often create a surreal, unusual photograph. Anything cold tends to photograph darker, while anything with more heat becomes much lighter. This effect can most clearly been seen when photographing nature. Sky and water will turn deep and rich tones of black whiles leaves, grass, and other vegetation turn much lighter.
